3 Days To Go

At midday On Sunday July 1st 2007

we are asking everyone concerned about the effects of climate change to simply turn everything off for an hour. That is one hour with no cars, mobile phones, televisions, household appliances or any other non-vital equipment. We would also like as many businesses as possible to join in and publicly show their commitment to tackling climate change. Effectively, we want to unplug the world for an hour or at least your little bit of it.

One Hour No Power is not just another event about raising our awareness of global warming; after all, the media has been pretty good at scaring us all silly on that one. One Hour No Power is an event to raise awareness of our collective ability to tackle climate change through our everyday lives.

This is a people powered event for all, old and young, multi race, multi faith, as well as for those of no faith. It is an opportunity for us to come together and publicise an event ourselves, help to shape it, swap green ideas and talk to each other instead of being talked to.

It is up to you how you spend the hour. You could hold a sponsored event for your favourite environmental group, take to the roads on your bike, hug a tree (while stocks last), write your personal green action plan for the coming year or even hold a John and Yoko style love-in.

Visit www.onehournopower.com for more information about how you can join in.

Thank You.

Green and Blacks

Green and Blacks Fairtrade Chocolate

It all started back in 1991 when Craig Sams, founder of Whole Earth - the pioneering organic food company - was sent a sample of dark 70% chocolate made from organic cocoa beans. His wife, environment columnist for The Times and confirmed chocoholic, Josephine Fairley, found the half eaten bar on Craig's desk and sampled some for herself. The intense flavour was unique and unlike anything she had tasted before. Jo was convinced other chocolate lovers would appreciate it in the same way she had and they set about making the world's first organic chocolate. The final product was a high-quality, bittersweet dark chocolate bar, packed with 70% cocoa solids - enough to make chocolate fans sit up and take notice..

As the brand began to gain a loyal following, Maya Gold was added to the range in 1994 - the product of a holiday Jo & Craig made to where they discovered cocoa farmers were being penalised, as some larger confectionery companies tried to drive cocoa prices down. They agreed to pay the farmers a fair price for their crops and created the flavour of Maya Gold to capture the taste of the rainforests where the cocoa is grown. This way of doing business didn't seem different to them - it was what came naturally but it susbequently earned them the UK's first Fairtrade mark.

Turn It Down

I was browsing the net idly yesterday and my eyes fell on a banner advertisement from Ariel, the washing powder brand. Their latest marketing campaign urges customers to turn down their washing machine by ten degrees to thirty degrees centigrade. I duly clicked through and landed on a flash presentation that failed to perform even though I have a very good computer and broadband connection. I looked for an escape link and took in a sharp breath when I saw their competition to win a Toyota Prius.

Okay, I know the Prius is the latest green must have but we really know that it isn't all that green. Its marketing spin is focused on evading the congestion charges in London rather than saving the planet by reducing carbon emissions.

Recently the Advertising Standards Authority upheld a complaint about the Prius' latest advertisement on British television. The advert claimed the Prius emitted "up to" one tonne less CO2 than equivalent rivals. The truth was they were massaging the figures and manipulated the statistical research to support their argument. They claimed the Prius emitted significantly less CO2 than some other cars with greater engine capacity, no other car with a 1.5 litre engine featured in the statistics.

Its my belief that NO car can ever be wholly compatible with saving the environment. I choose NOT to drive. Now that's a lifestyle choice.

Turn down your washing machine yes but catching the bus, train, tube, tram is still better than buying a Prius.

Things Money Can't Buy

In this money obsessed society in which we live and co-exist people lose sight so quickly of what's truly important. To shed my corporate skin I head for the Derbyshire Hills and this picture explains why. Clear air, the smell of wild garlic, a meadow full of wildflowers and then there's.....the view.

One Hour No Power Video

I've been spreading the word at work and am getting good feedback on this one. So many people agree with the One Hour No Power ideal. If the question remains 'will it make a difference?' My answer is 'it will to you.' The world can only change when its occupants change their world-view. Watch the movie and decide for yourself.
